Episode 38: Jess Van Zeil – Eye Won

At the age of 21, Jess Van Zeil felt invincible.  From Bungee Jumping to SCUBA diving in South Africa, Jess was fulfilling her dreams as a true adventurer, a student and passionate sportswoman.

In the midst of her dreams unfolding, Jess was informed she had Conjunctival Ocular Melanoma: a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.  Despite returning to Australia, home to some of the best melanoma experts in the world, the cancer was relentless.

She was given a choice, they either had to remove her eye, or the alternative would be death within 5 years.

Defying the odds, Jess emerged having discovered the powerful principles that not only guided her through her fear, loneliness and anger, but revolutionised her mindset to become powerfully positive and ridiculously resilient.

With her sassy blend of honesty and humour, Jess reveals what it takes to thrive in the face of adversity.  I am grateful to have a conversation with Jess to discover how she has navigated life on her terms – and with the most dazzling collection of eye patches.
